Origins of Taoism

Taoism was started by a Chinese Philosopher named Lao Tze, The supreme master, in the 6th century BC. Lao lived in the same era as the Ancient Chinese Philosopher, Conficius. It is said that one day Lao Tze left his job and rode west on an ox. At the mountain pass the guardian asked him to write down his teachings. This is how the sacred book of Tao called the Doodejing was written.

"The greatest excellence is like water - Lao Tze
When water meets resistance or obstacles, its kinectic power crests
Self-propelling, water's currents also move other objects to action
Rock or land [steadfast obstacles]
are ceaselessly worn away to new
avenues [opportunities]
Having undiminished cleansing powers,
it is forever improving itself and others
Wheter flowing in rivers and streams
to the sea, evaporating into clouds,
raining down from heaven, or
gathering again into rivers and
streams, no matter how it changes
water never loses itself or its
beneficence and efficiency"
